This is a photo from Bouchercon 2006 in Madison, Wisconsin. That's New York Times bestselling author Laurie R. King on the left and NYT bestselling author Dana Stabenow on the right.

This is a photo of me and Kristy Montee at
Lee Child's party at Bouchercon 2006. Kristy is one half of the writing team that is New York Times bestselling author P.J. Parrish ("P.J. Parrish" is a pseudonym for sisters Kristy and Kelly Montee). This photo, as well as the next few that follow, were all taken at Bouchercon.

This is a photo of the dinner group I put together for Thursday night at Bouchercon. From left to right, that's me, Amy Alessio, Dusty & Lynn Rhoades, Susan Gibberman, and Kathleen Ernst.

This is an overhead shot from the St. Martin's Press Minotaur Party. Special thanks to SMP authors Bill Crider, Alex Sokoloff, and Steve Hockensmith for helping me to crash this members-only event.

This is an overhead shot from the Crimespree Party. I needed no help crashing this one. It was open to all.

This is a picture of David Morrell and I at the Crimespree Party.

This one is of Brett Battles, Sean Doolittle, and me at the Crimespree Party.

Another Crimespree Party photo. That's Robert Walker, JA Konrath, and me. Rock on!

This is from my panel. Believe it or not, that's National Book Award Winning Young Adult author Pete Hautman right of me in the photo. Next to Pete are YA authors Daniel J. Hale and Kathleen Ernst.

This is a photo from a September 2006 bookstore event at Quail Ridge Books and Music in Raleigh, North Carolina. Pictured here are several authors included in the 2006 Best New Stories of the South anthology, as well as editor Allan Gurganus (far left).

This photo was taken in August 2006 at the World Science Fiction Convention in Anaheim, California. That's sci-fi author Larry Niven and I. Larry's book N-Space was the very first paperback I ever bought, and it played a key role in shaping my fiction writing between the ages of 16-30.

This photo was also taken at the World Science Fiction Convention in August 2006. That's Senior Editor David G. Hartwell holding his Hugo Award. Coincidentally, David edits for the publisher that published Larry Niven's N-Space mentioned above. He was also the first professional editor I ever met in March 1998 at ICFA.

This is another photo from WorldCon 2006. Pictured here is editor/writer Gardner Dozois. Gardner edited Asimov's Science Fiction Magazine from 1984 to 2004. It was Asimov's that gave me my first professional accolade, when in 1998, I was selected as a finalist for the Isaac Asimov Award (since re-named the Dell Magazines Award).

Another WorldCon '06 photo. This is sci-fi author Connie Willis and I. Connie is one of the most honored (and funny) science-fiction authors in the history of the genre. She has won nine Hugo Awards and six Nebulas.

This picture was taken in Raleigh, North Carolina at the Village Draft House on August 8, 2006. Left to right is JD Rhoades, JA Konrath, Alex Sokoloff, David Terrenoire, and myself. JD, Alex, and David are all St. Martin's Press authors. Konrath's novels have come from Hyperion.

This picture is of National Book Award Winner Pete Hautman and me clowning around a little bit, after a joint author event at the Poisoned Pen Bookstore on April 18, 2006. Pete was the headlining author, and we drew a crowd of about a dozen people. This was my second bookstore appearance, and I sold 2 copies of Amber Page and the Legend of the Coral Stone. The experience was a huge success, and Pete is one of the nicest authors I've met.

This is a picture of author Kris Neri and myself in front of The Well Red Coyote Bookstore in Sedona, Arizona. Kris and her husband Joe own the store, and The Well Red Coyote was the first bookstore to give me an author event. That event was in February 2006, and I drew in a crowd of 15 strangers and sold 5 copies of Amber Page and the Legend of the Coral Stone, a pleasantly surprising success.

This is Steve Hockensmith and yours truly on the event of Steve's debut book tour in February 2006 for his first published novel Holmes on the Range, a witty who-dunit set in 1890s Montana. Steve is a regular in magazines like Alfred Hitchcock's Mystery Magazine and Ellery Queen's Mystery Magazine.

This is a picture of T. Jefferson Parker and I at the Poisoned Pen in March 2006. Jeff was on tour for his latest book The Fallen, a copy of which he is holding.

This photo came from a trip I took to Alaska in July 2005. My wife saw an advertisment in the local Anchorage paper for a bookstore signing by Marguerite Reiss, and so I called, found out more about it, and we went to the bookstore with a small group of friends. Marguerite was a pleasure to meet, and the fellow standing behind me, Gene Moe, told us the story of how he was attacked without warning by a 750-pound female grizzly bear. He almost lost his right arm but managed to defend himself with the four-inch pocket knife I'm holding up on the table. The story of his encounter makes one of the essays in Marguerite's book Bear Attacks of the Century.

This photo was taken at the Poisoned Pen Bookstore in Scottsdale, Arizona in July 2005. Looking like I'm about fourteen years old, that's me in the orange hat. Holding up his novel Bloody Mary, is Joe Konrath. And to our left is Louise Ure, whose first novel Forcing Amaryllis was published in June '05. Louise, incidentally, was the creator of the enormously popular California Raisins ad campaign of the late 1980s. You may remember the dancin' raisins from TV commercials; that was her project.

On November 16, 2004, I met Edward Albee, who has won three Pulitzer prizes. Along with John Steinbeck and Ernest Hemingway, Albee is one of the most influential writers with regards to my own writing. I learned a lot about dialogue by reading his plays.

In June 2004, I met Ray Bradbury. I felt like a young apprentice meeting Michelangelo or something, man. Tidal forces surround Ray Bradbury, and the experience of meeting him at this point in his career was an experience I will carry with me the rest of my life. He is quite possibly the kindest person in American literary history.
